Related Issues in India:

1. For the last 15 years resident of several villages around few thermal power plants have been forced to eat grey bread due to Fly-Ash particles that simply fly in and drop from nowhere. Even milk, cooked rice, pulses and DRINKING WATER in her kitchen have a thin grey film. Some villages have to depend on wells to fulfill their drinking water requirement. According to an estimate, 300-350 million tones (MT) of fly-ash are produced as a result of combustion of 3000 MT of coal every year. Coal combustion from thermal power plant also releases toxic gases such as SO2, NO2,etc and toxic metal such as B, Ni, Cr, Hg, Cd, which are very harmful for health & environment. Further it is estimated that by the end of the century 30,000 hectare of land will be required for disposal of fly-ash.

2. Few villages are situated near to a no. of large and small Tanneries. The affluent discharged from the Tanneries goes directly in the river without proper treatment, which contaminate the drinking water. The affluent discharged from Tanneries is rich with chromium and other hazardous content. This contamination paralysis the various body part of human body. Further due to this mother gives birth to physically handicapped child.

3.In India , Green Revolution brought about technological breakthrough, which led to short duration high yielding varieties helping intensive use of land in a year, increasing area brought under irrigation and prolific use of chemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides. Of late it has been recognized that the increasing efforts to raise agriculture growth has cost us dearly in the form of land and water degradation. According to National Remote Sensing Agency and Forest Survey of India, 60% of total areas under cultivation are substantially degraded. Most of this damage is in the form of topsoil. Deforestation and water logging are other major problems, which are helping in degradation of land. This causes increasing decline in productivity over the years and finally lead to abandonment. Problems are aggravating further with more and more new lands being brought under canal irrigation without managing properly the existing lands. Salinity and Alkalinity has aggravated in the areas where more than one source of irrigation exist, low precipitation, unscientific use of water, improper cropping pattern and drainage facility. Out of total agriculture land only 56% land is under active cultivation. Further 20%land in the village is degraded whereas degradation of other land is on the rise.

There are other issues also, but we are working at present on these issues only.
